Canelo and Golovkin trilogy in advanced talks for September

Is this Golovkin’s chance for retribution?

According to The Athletic’s Lance Pugmire, Canelo Alvarez (53-1-2, 36KOs) has agreed on personal financial terms for a trilogy bout with Gennady Golovkin (40-1-1, 35 KOs) with September 12 as a goal date, as a part of the Mexican Independence Day weekend. The rumored venue is AT&T Stadium in Dallas, but the date, site and weight class have not been finalized yet.

DAZN Rewind of the first bout

Canelo was previously scheduled to a May bout against Billy Joe Saunders (29-0, 14 KOs) in Las Vegas in the super middleweight weight class. However, fight was firstly postponed until June but could even be prolonged due to a trilogy bout with GGG.

Golovkin and Canelo rivalry is surely seen as one of the biggest boxing has seen in recent years not only because of their popularity but razor-thin fights and a failed drug test by the Mexican prior to one of the bouts. In their first bout in 2017, the pair were a part of a controversial majority draw, as most of the fans saw the fight going to the Kazakh. A year later, Alvarez took home a majority decision which could have gone both ways.

Even though both were recently signed by DAZN, the biggest sports streaming platform, with top officials of the platform constantly being unsuccessful in getting Alvarez to agree to a third fight.

Canelo has feuded publicly with his promoter, Oscar de la Hoya, over the last year. Reports stated that Alvarez wanted to negotiate with Golden Boy for extra compensation to take the fight, which would have exceeded the guaranteed pay to him by DAZN after he signed a 10-fight, $350 million deal.

At this point, we may see an even better Canelo, seeing his dominant performances against Daniel Jacobs and Sergey Kovalev, while Triple G has struggled mightily against Sergiy Derevyanchenko last October in a decision win for the vacant IBF title.
