UFC Lightweight Champion officially cancelled the bout against Tony Ferguson
In a heartfelt Instagram address to his fans, Khabib Nurmagomedov explained his situation prior to his scheduled main event against Ferguson.
Khabib has been accused by majority of the MMA fans for the bout’s fifth cancellation. Their argument? The champion’s flight back home to Dagestan after five weeks of training camp in AKA gym.
In the meantime, according to Nurmagomedov, Dana White told him there would be a change of location as to where the UFC 249 would be held. Abu Dhabi was the ‘99%’ option.
“I am even hearing that they are looking for an opponent for Tony, because he is in the States and I am here in Russia. But I am here not on my own will. The UFC told me that this fight 100% isn’t happening in the USA, and even if it’s not happening in the Emirates it will happen on this side of Atlantic. We discussed everything with the UFC. By that time I already spent 5 weeks of hard training in the AKA,” Khabib told RT Sport a few days, prior, as reported here.
UFC is now on a lookout for new opponents for Tony, as well as completing the card by mega fights. Both Dustin Poirier and Justin Gaethje claimed they would step in, but ‘The Highlight’ seems to be favorable, as you can already bet on the outcome of Ferguson vs. Gaethje.
Another fighter wanting to be a part of the main event is Jorge Masvidal, who, instead of facing ‘El Cucuy’ might get a chance to fight for the UFC Welterweight title against Kamaru Usman. The two have gone back and forth on social media, with both claiming the other is ‘ducking’ the fight.
What is currently happening in the minds of the management of the UFC is unclear, but the fact is they are still ‘moving mountains’ to make this event happen and should be awarded with praise for wanting to deliver during a global pandemic!
